Two Companies Submit Bids for Wausau’s Residential Garbage and Recycling Contract

Friday, September 12th, 2025 -- 8:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Two companies, including the current contract holder, have submitted bids for the City of Wausau’s residential garbage and recycling contract.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Public Works Director Eric Lindman says Waste Management and Harters were the two bidders. Their proposals will be evaluated this week and brought to the Public Health and Safety Committee for consideration at a future meeting.

The city is at the end of a ten-year contract with Harters for those services and has the option for a seven-year extension. Finance Director MaryAnn Groat cautioned against exercising that because the terms of the deal have not kept up with inflation.

Earlier this year, the Committee voted to open an RFP process, with the understanding that Harters would likely be one of the bidders. Terms of the bids were not immediately available, and more information is expected to be released when the item is presented to the committee.
