Wausau Man Sentenced for Providing Drugs Used in Fatal Overdose in 2023

Wednesday, August 13th, 2025 -- 12:01 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A 38-year-old Wausau man has been sentenced to prison time for providing the drugs that led to a fatal overdose back in 2023.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Matthew Gesicki pleaded no contest to the charges as part of a deal earlier this year. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to 43 years in the state prison system, including 23 years in prison and another 20 years on extended supervision.

Investigators found Gesicki sold drugs to another man, who later ingested them with his girlfriend. The woman died. The man, Andrew Washburn, survived and is serving prison time for homicide by delivery of drugs and distributing fentanyl.

Gesicki reportedly told the man to be careful because he had been putting fentanyl “in everything.” The sentence also closes a second case from 2023 for possession of less than 10 grams of fentanyl with the intent to distribute and possession of more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Gesicki also pleaded no contest to those counts. He had been facing more than 50 years in prison on all counts.
