TOXICOLOGY REPORT: MFLD TEACHER WAS INTOXICATED AT TIME OF ACCIDENT

Friday, November 21st, 2008 -- 12:01 PM

The Wood County Sheriff?s Department has concluded their investigation into the mysterious death of a Marshfield teacher.

37-year-old Troy Schmitt died when his minivan was struck by a train near Auburndale on October 17.

The vehicle was parked on the tracks, facing the train, 20-feet off the roadway. The lights were turned off and the conductor says Schmitt was slumped over the steering wheel at the time of impact.

An autopsy determined he was still alive at the time of impact.

Sgt. Wayne Schultz of the Wood County Sheriff?s Department says toxicology reports now show Schmitt was extremely intoxicated at the time of the crash. His blood-alcohol content was .277?three times the legal limit.

As a result, the crash has been determined to be a traffic crash with alcohol as a contributing factor.
