Scams Making the Rounds in Wisconsin Rapids
Friday, August 1st, 2025 -- 1:00 PM
Scammers are targeting people across Wisconsin, including recent scams making the rounds in Wisconsin Rapids.
Scammers often pretend to be from your bank, credit card company, utility provider, local government, or even your own family. These calls can feel urgent and convincing but don’t be fooled.
Common Scam Tactics:
- A caller claims to be from your bank or credit card company, warning of suspicious charges.
- Someone pretends to be a law enforcement officer, utility worker, or IRS agent, demanding payment.
- You receive a call or message from someone pretending to be a family member in trouble and needing money right away, often called the “grandparent scam.”
How to Protect Yourself:
- Don’t Act Right Away – Scammers create panic to rush your decision. Take a breath.
- Verify First – Hang up and call the company or agency directly using a number you trust — not the one they give you.
- Have a Family Code Word – Set up a secret word or phrase that only your family knows. If someone claims to be a loved one in distress, ask for the code word.
- Talk to Someone You Trust – Before sending money or giving out info, talk to a family member or friend.
- Call Us – We Can Help – If something seems suspicious or you just aren’t sure, contact the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department at 715-423-4444. They’re here to support and guide you.
Remember:
- Never give out personal or financial information over the phone to someone you don’t know.
- Don’t send gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency to someone you haven’t met in person.
- Government agencies will never demand immediate payment or threaten arrest over the phone.
