(Sirena Mankins, Editor of the Hub City Times) Marshfield Utilities received the American Public Power Association Sue Kelly Community Service Award during the organization’s national conference in June, recognizing the utility’s community engagement efforts.
According to Sirena Mankins, Editor of the Hub City Times, General Manager Nicolas Kumm accepted the award on behalf of the utility on June 10 at the American Public Power Association’s National Conference.
The award honors utilities that demonstrate exceptional commitment to their communities through “good neighbor” activities. The Wisconsin utility marked its 120th anniversary of community service in 2024 with a comprehensive giving initiative called ComMUnity Care Project.
The project supports local communities through donations and volunteer efforts across multiple areas. Marshfield Utilities focused its community service efforts on four key areas: career education, local charities and nonprofits, community events, and economic development.
Over the past year, the utility has participated in educational programs, including reading story times at the public library and providing circuit kits for fourth-grade classes.
The utility also supported career education through interview preparation for high school students and established scholarships for high school seniors pursuing electric or water-related degrees. An additional scholarship was created for graduates of the Marshfield Utilities Youth Apprentice program seeking post-high school education.
Employee volunteer efforts included donating more than 300 backpacks for Supplies 4 Success, providing professional attire for Soup or Socks clothing pantry, and making financial donations to the local Junior Achievement Program.
The American Public Power Association represents more than 2,000 public power utilities across the United States. The Sue Kelly Community Service Award recognizes utilities that go beyond their core mission to strengthen their communities.
