On Friday, August 1, cyclists with the Western Route will load up their support vehicles and set out on a meaningful three-day trek for the 41st Annual Heroes Bike Tour.

This ride traces its roots back to 1985 when Tom Miller pedaled 1,244 miles, each mile symbolizing a Wisconsin service member who gave their life during the Vietnam War.

His ride raised awareness for Vietnam Veterans and laid the foundation for The Highground. What began as a solitary journey has grown into the Heroes Ride, an annual tradition honoring sacrifice and service.

Not every rider can commit to the full three-day ride. Many of them join segments along the route, riding as far as they're able, all united for the same cause. Local veteran groups and generous businesses support riders with donated snacks and meals along the way.

Early Sunday morning, August 3, the Western Route riders begin their final stretch to The Highground. They’re expected to arrive between 10:30 and 11:30am, warmly welcomed by Vietnam Veterans and guests attending the 2025 Vietnam Veterans Reunion.

This event is not just a one-day ride, it’s the result of months of preparation. Riders train rigorously, secure sponsorships and brace for the physical toll of multiple days on the road: sore muscles, weather extremes and the grit that comes with the journey.

The welcome they receive at The Highground is powerful, the heartbeat behind a mission that has inspired healing and remembrance for over four decades.

They gather on the plaza for the “Heroes Family” meal and a brief ceremony before heading home. It’s one of the most quietly powerful events of the year. The Heroes Ride is The Highground’s largest and longest-running fundraiser, generating over $74,700 in 2024.

Proceeds from this incredible event fuel life-changing veteran programs and help The Highground with operating expenses. The Highground proudly welcomes returning riders and eagerly invites new participants each year.

There's still time to get involved;  joining the Western Route empowers a legacy of honor, education, and healing for veterans and their families.
