Pending a Vote Tuition at UW System to Increase Next School Year

Wednesday, July 9th, 2025 -- 12:00 PM

(Cleo Krejci, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) Pending an upcoming vote, tuition for University of Wisconsin System students is set to rise in the upcoming school year.

According to Cleo Krejci with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Board of Regents is expected to vote July 10 on a proposed 5% increase to resident undergraduate tuition for most UW campuses. At UW-Madison, that 5% tuition increase would add an additional $500, bringing the 2025-26 annual resident undergraduate tuition to $10,506.

“Preserving quality while maintaining our ability to be a leader on tuition affordability in the Midwest is a top priority,” UW System President Jay Rothman said in a July 8 announcement about the tuition rates.

“After a decade of a tuition freeze and lagging state aid, we believe we have struck a balance for students and families with this proposal and the recent state investments in the UWs as part of the 2025-27 biennial budget.” If the vote passes, it would mark the third consecutive year with tuition increases. Tuition hikes in the 2023-24 school year were the first since 2012.

For 2025-26, a proposal by Rothman said all UW campuses should raise resident undergraduate tuition by at least 4%, with the option to add an additional 1%

Most schools agreed , other than Green Bay, which is sticking with 4%, and River Falls, which is proposing a 5.8% increase in order to support specific initiatives. Tuition rates in the 2025-26 year would also increase for most undergraduate nonresidents and graduate students under the proposal.
