(Erik Pfantz, Marshfield News-Herald) Proposed wind energy production systems are prompting discussion in several central Wisconsin communities.
According to Erik Pfantz with the Marshfield News-Herald, residents of an area including several towns north of Marshfield in Marathon County were invited in May to hear more information about Alliant Energy’s proposed Hub City Wind Farm.
The proposed wind energy project is planned to produce 100 megawatts using roughly 20 to 25 wind turbines. The project could provide enough energy to power 30,000 homes after construction is completed in 2031.
The town of McMillan is holding a “community discussion” for residents including wind farm supporters and skeptics on July 14 following the town board meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the McMillan Town Hall located at 113904 Elm Tree Road.
Representatives from Marathon County, Alliant Energy and local activist groups were all invited to attend the meeting, McMillan town chairperson Debbie Derfus told a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter. Two more wind energy projects were also recently proposed in Marathon County.
Renewables was introduced in 2023 in the nearby towns of Brighton and Eau Pleine called Marathon Wind Farm. Properties within the town of Eau Pleine are also included in Alliant Energy’s project.
Another 150-megawatt project called Stonemark Wind Energy Center was proposed in 2022 by Chicago, Illinois-based Invenergy in towns north of the Hub City project including Rietbrock, Frankfort, Johnson and Wien.
