DNR Asking Residents to Watch for Asian Longhorned Beetle
Monday, July 7th, 2025 -- 11:00 AM
(WBAY) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking people to watch for another invasive insect.
The Asian longhorned beetle has established itself in other states, as close as Ohio, where it’s destroying maples and other trees that shed their leaves each fall. It hasn’t been found in Wisconsin yet.
The beetle is also called the starry sky beetle for its appearance: They’re shiny black with white spots, like stars. Their long antennae have black and white stripes. Adult beetles are 1 to 1½ inches long.
They’re most active in July, August and September. If you think you see an Asian longhorned beetle, or any other new and emerging insect, the DNR asks you to take a photo of it, as high-quality and close up as you can.
Report it along with the location, as precisely as possible, to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection at [email protected].
You can also call the DATCP’s Pest Hotline toll-free, 1-866-440-7523.
