Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce Warns of Recent Check Washing Scam

The Marshfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry want to share a recent incident brought to their attention that serves as a critical reminder to closely monitor your business accounts.

A MACCI member recently fell victim to a check washing scam, where a legitimate check sent to a vendor was intercepted and both the payee and amount were fraudulently altered.

This individual is now working with their bank and the Marshfield Police Department to recover the funds and identify the perpetrator. The investigating detective noted that this is the first check washing case they’ve seen in some time, which suggests this scam may be resurfacing in our area.

Please be aware that in addition to altering the check itself, these criminals gain access to the routing and account numbers printed on checks, which can lead to further fraudulent activity.

In this case, the member’s account had to be shut down as a precaution. MACCI encourages all members to carefully review bank statements and keep a close eye on account activity. If you suspect suspicious activity, contact your financial institution immediately.
