CLARK CO. UNITED WAY LOOKING FOR FUNDS, VOLUNTEERS

Monday, November 10th, 2008 -- 8:41 AM

The Clark County United Way held a fundraiser kick-off on Thursday.

Tim Swiggum of Owen is a past president of the group.

The United Way supplied grant monies to a number of non-profit groups last year.

"The application process comes in the fall. We sit as a group and decide who will get funds from what funds are raised," Swiggum says, "It's a volunteer effort. All of the money, except some administrative money, goes into these local organizations and helps the whole community."

Swiggum says they plan to move the headquarters of the Clark County group from Owen to Neillsville.

Aside from donations, the United Way is really looking for new board members.

"Our board members have been serving, probably an average of four years now and really holding it together. We have to a put a plea out there for new volunteers to serve on our board," Swiggum explains, "It's not that time-consuming. It's very rewarding."

Most of the their donations come from businesses. In past years, they've raised between $10,000 and $14,000. Swiggum believes they could easily raise $100,000 if the community got more involved.
