TODDLER STRUCK, KILLED IN ACCIDENT

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 -- 2:01 PM

An infant was killed when he wandered on to the highway in Christie Monday.

According to a press release from the Clark County Sheriff?s Department, 20-month old Elvin Martin was walking in the southbound lane of STH 73 when a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Owen Man struck him.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. in Christie, which is a small community located between Neillsville and Greenwood.

Authorities have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors.

"(It was) dark out. He pulled over immediately to the shoulder. Another passerby saw the incident and informed him he had struck a child, he didn't even know that. He immediately called 9-1-1 and got authorities rolling to the scene," explains Clark County Sheriff Louis Rosandich.

While authorities don?t plan to seek charges against the driver, Rosandich says they are still investigating whether the family was negligent in their care.

"That all depends on what our investigation reveals at this time. If those are warranted, we'll certainly forward those on to the District Attorney," he says.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the family was looking for the boy and why he wasn?t being watched, according to Rosandich.
