BBB Warns of Scams Involving the New REAL ID

By now, you’ve probably heard about REAL ID, a federally compliant, security-enhanced identification.

Come May 7th, everyone over the age of 18 will need one to board a domestic flight, access federal facilities, and enter certain secure locations. If you already have a REAL ID compliant form of identification, then there is no need to rush to meet the deadline; if you do not, you will need to upgrade.

Real IDs have a star on the upper top portion of the card. You can only obtain a REAL ID in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.

Some states may allow you to start the process online, but you have to finish it in person. If you see a website offering REAL ID without an in-person visit to the DMV, it’s probably fake.

Do not enter your information and report the website to BBB Scam Tracker. You will need proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card, proof of Social Security Number, proof of residency, and proof of a legal name change.

If you are asked to provide additional information, such as bank account or credit card numbers, that is a red flag of a scam. Obtaining a REAL ID requires a fee.
