The Marshfield Common Council heard a couple public comments at their meeting last week.

Nick Poeschel addressed the Common Council regarding the potential elimination of two committees: Finance, Budget, Personnel, and Public Works. He expressed concerns over streamlining operations and reducing workload, suggesting that such changes may lead to complications and a lack of transparency. Bill Penkler expressed his dissatisfaction with the rising tension and disagreements at the council meeting on April 8, 2025.

Discussion took place about Policy No. 4.815 (Emergency Procurement). During the meeting, Alderman Mike O'Reilly raised questions regarding the emergency procurement process, particularly around the criteria that categorize a situation as an emergency. The policy was approved in the Finance, Budget, and Personnel minutes.

Alderman Derek Weherman expressed concern that, similar to previous projects, the current undertaking is not adequately budgeted and may require additional funding. The Board of Public Works minutes were approved.

The budget discussion encompassed adjustments necessary for Geospatial Services (aerial flight mapping project), which exceeded the original budget estimate. It was explained that funding will come from multiple sources (wastewater, water utility, engineering, and long-term debt). The item was approved.

The Common Council unanimously approved the Class B liquor license suspension for La Taberna Club Nocturno, at 434 S. Central Ave., through May 3, 2025. Officials determined the owner violated Wisconsin statutes and the City's municipal code on multiple occasions.

Alanna Feddick-Goodwin was selected to be on the Ethics Committee. The Mayor is looking for a Council member to replace Russ Stuaber on the Housing Committee.

Alderperson Michael O'Reilly proposed dissolving the Finance, Budget, and Personnel Committee and the Board of Public Works and redirecting all agenda items to the Common Council meetings.

There were various perspectives on whether to maintain the current committee structure or move towards a unified council meeting format. The item was tabled, and no decision on changing the current structure was made at the meeting.

Alderman Brian Varsho suggested discussing the possibility of rescheduling the Board of Public Works meetings to Tuesday nights.
