MORE FUNDING FOR HIGHWAYS?
Monday, October 20th, 2008 -- 10:20 AM
Clark County budget writers are sending a resolution to the board that would allow the Highway Department to pave more roads next year.On Thursday, the committee voted to send the resolution authorizing the borrowing of $600,000 to the board during the November 12th budget meeting.
The general obligation loan would be paid off in 2009.
This type of borrowing is an exception to the state-imposed levy limit and it would be paid off using levy dollars.
Finance Committee members felt it was a good time to attempt the resolution, seeing, even if passed, the county?s tax rate would be lower than the current year?s.
Due to budget constraints and the increasing cost of fuel and materials, the Highway Department only planned to pave nine miles of county road in 2009. The extra $600,000 will allow them to do an additional five miles.
The resolution requires a ?-majority vote. If approved, the budget would also need to be amended from the floor.
