CWD REARS UGLY HEAD

Monday, October 13th, 2008 -- 8:24 AM

Wisconsin agriculture officials have confirmed the first case of a fatal brain disease in a captive deer in nearly four years.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed on Thursday a doe on the Alligator Creek Whitetails LLC hunting preserve near Junction City was infected with chronic wasting disease. The doe was killed Sept. 20.

The preserve's 150-deer herd has been quarantined. That means live deer can't move off or on the property without permission from state agriculture officials. The preserve can still run hunts.

The last time a deer from a Wisconsin farm tested positive for CWD was January 2005. To date, 97 farm-raised animals in the state have tested positive for the disease.
