DONATIONS NEEDED TO FINISH HUMANE SOCIETY ADDITION
Monday, October 6th, 2008 -- 12:10 PM
Unexpected expenses are slowing progress on an addition to the Clark County Humane Society. After 21 years in the same cramped quarters, Chuck Wegner says the 6,000-square foot addition will double the size of the current facility and will add new amenities to help them care for pets.
$200,000 was budgeted, but the project is closer to $300,000.
"We figured we'd just hook this new addition into our existing septic system," Wegner explains, "The DNR and Zoning (officials) came along and said, 'Ah, no'. That is actually a drain field and you can't do that anymore."
Wegner says they were forced to install a holding tank system.
They also learned the roof on the existing building needs to be replaced.
Wegner wants people to know they would really appreciate donations to help complete the project.
"If you'd like to make a large donation, a lifetime donation, this would be a really, really good time," Wegner says, "A lot of people like to do those things after they're dead, why not do it when you can see the good you're doing with that gift."
The new addition will allow the CCHS to double the number of low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. Their FixaPet program currently serves pets from 16 counties. It will feature in-house laundry, a room for rescued pets and geothermal heating and cooling.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Clark County Humane Society is one of the few ?no kill? shelters in the state.
