Reminder: Dogs and Cats in the City of Marshfield Must by Licensed and Vaccinated for Rabies by Next Monday, March 31st
Monday, March 24th, 2025 -- 9:00 AM
Dogs and cats in the City of Marshfield must be vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
The veterinarian will then issue a rabies certificate explaining the vaccination and expiration date, which is good for one or three years. At the time of vaccination, a rabies tag will be provided.
The rabies tag from the veterinarian is not a license. City ordinance states all cats and dogs living within the city limits of Marshfield and are five months of age or older must be licensed annually.
The license requirement is for citizens' safety to ensure the animals have proper vaccines. The license is also used to return pets if they become lost safely. A rabies certificate must be obtained from the veterinarian to purchase a license from the City.
Licenses are available at City Hall, 207 W 6th Street, Marshfield, upon showing the pet's rabies certificate. City Hall is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fridays, 7:30 a.m. until noon.
Pet License Fees:
- Neutered male dog - $12.00
- Neutered male cat - $8.00
- Un-neutered male dog - $20.00
- Un-neutered cat - $16.00
- Spayed female dog - $12.00
- Spayed female cat - $8.00
- Un-spayed female dog - $20.00
- Un-spayed female cat - $16.00
- Late fee - $5.00
An additional late fee is administered after April 1. If, for some reason, you cannot make it to City Hall during business hours, you may have a friend or family member license the pet for you.
However, a friend or family member can obtain a pet's license, but make sure the right is in the name of the pet's owner. Licenses are valid from January 1 through December 31.
By law, all pets must be licensed by March 31. If licensed after that date, a $5 late fee is charged. The license must be renewed every year. The fine for failing to license a pet in Marshfield is $124.
Marshfield also has a City Ordinance 9.52(3)(d) which states that a household may not have more than two dogs, cats, rabbits, or guinea pigs without a special written permit provided by an ordinance officer.
