Wausau Police Department Warns of Scam Hitting the Area
Wednesday, March 5th, 2025 -- 1:00 PM

The Wausau Police Department is warning of a scam hitting the area.
Scammers are sending text messages claiming you owe unpaid tolls and must pay immediately to avoid fines or even vehicle impoundment.
A recent scam text reads:
"Please make sure your toll is paid by March 3, 2025, to prevent additional penalties... Make your payment here: [fake link]”
Red Flags in This Scam:
- The message comes from an unknown number and includes urgent language to pressure you.
- It contains random emojis and unusual phrasing, legitimate agencies don’t use casual language like "Wishing you a sunny day full of happiness."
- The payment link is suspicious, official toll agencies do not send payment requests via text with shortened links.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Do not click any links in unexpected messages about payments.
- Verify directly, log into your official E-ZPass account or call the agency using their published number.
- Report the scam by using your "Block and Report Spam" feature or forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM) and deleting it.
- Warn others, scammers rely on fear and urgency to trick people. The more we share, the harder it is for them to succeed.
Stay alert, if you or someone you know has fallen victim to a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov. If your case involves a known suspect or actual loss of money, contact your local law enforcement.
