USH 10 BRIDGE PROJECT DRAGS ON

Monday, September 22nd, 2008 -- 8:45 AM

Don?t expect U.S. 10 near Marshfield to reopen anytime soon.

Crews have been replacing a bridge spanning the Yellow River this summer. It?s caused a major detour that was supposed to end by now; but unforeseen problems will delay the bridge?s opening until mid- to late-October.

Jeff Stewart is a project manager with DOT. He said it?s been one delay after another, starting with heavy rains in the spring.

"There was some bedrock that was not picked up by borings. That took an extra week or so," he says, "For the other two piers, there were remnants of a bridge we believe was built in 1900. They were underwater and unexpected. They each took an extra week."

The deck was poured on Thursday. Now crews have to wait for it to cure.

"The work that needs to be completed usually takes three to four weeks to get this kind of work done," Stewart explained.

While locals have found shorter routes, the marked detour takes drivers all the way to STH 73.
