(Wisconsin Radio Network) A bill at the state Capitol limits the frequency of school funding referendums.
According to the Wisconsin Radio Network, the measure by Republican lawmakers requires a limit on any school district funding increases by referendum to once every four years.
A study by the Wisconsin Policy Forum found public school districts put a record 241 referendums on ballots last year. That’s over a third of districts in Wisconsin.
Another 94 have been approved for this year. School districts have turned to referendums to close budget shortfalls or pay for facilities improvements. The bill’s sponsors believe capping referendums would increase fiscal responsibility and decrease the burden on taxpayers.
