GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS AS LOCAL SCHOOL MAKE LIST
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008 -- 1:50 PM
As this school year begins, the good news is many area schools have achieved the distinction of being New Wisconsin Promise Schools of Recognition. The bad news: that fact shows most area schools are high-poverty districts.
The distinction is given to the poorest districts in the state that still outperform the state average for schools with similar poverty rates and grade configurations. The districts must also make progress based on No Child Left Behind guidelines.
In our area, schools in the Greenwood, Granton, Loyal, Thorp, Owen-Withee, Abbotsford and Colby districts made the list.
Each school that makes the list gets a check for $1,500.
