Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), celebrated the opening of the first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Wisconsin funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law enacted by President Joe Biden.
Gov. Evers earlier this year signed historic legislation to enable WisDOT to receive and administer over $78 million NEVI investments to help Wisconsin bolster its EV infrastructure, through which the governor and WisDOT in May announced $23 million to support 53 projects to expand EV infrastructure across Wisconsin.
Fast-charging stations came online in December at Kwik Trip stores in Ashland, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls and additional charging stations are set to be available at other awarded sites in the coming months.
The Kwik Trip in Abbotsford will receive $311,260.40 and their match will be $216,299.60. The Express Mart in Thorp will receive $505,142.59 and their match will be $134,278.41.
Administered by WisDOT, the Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (WEVI) Program is a competitive grant program that distributes NEVI Formula Program funds to eligible entities for the installation, ownership, operation, and maintenance of NEVI-compliant EV charging stations throughout the state.
The WEVI plan ensures the funding will support charging stations that will be available to EV drivers wherever they travel in the state. Charging stations will be built within one mile of a highway intersection or interstate exit along Wisconsin’s Alternative Fuel Corridors, with the goal of ultimately reaching all corners of the state to support the more than 29,000 EVs registered in the state, as well as travelers and visitors.
WisDOT is currently accepting an additional round of applications to apply for federal funding through the NEVI Formula Program to fill coverage gaps after the first round of awards was announced in May.
WisDOT is currently accepting applications in selected areas until Feb. 14, 2025. Additional awards are expected to be announced in spring. More information on Wisconsin’s electrification program can be found on the WisDOT website here.
