DETECTIVE: MIND YOUR KIDS WEB USE
Monday, August 18th, 2008 -- 12:30 PM
In this day and age, parents need to be extra cautious of how their children are using the internet. That advice from a detective who helped bust a 53-year-old Northwoods man who thought he was chatting with a 15-year-old girl.
It was actually an undercover cop from Clark County.
Detective Jeff Baumgarten says online predators aren't rare and parents need to be careful?
"The biggest thing that I would recommend is never have the computer in a bedroom. It should always be out in a public family room. Some place parents will always have access to it," Baumgarten says, "They should be aware of any passwords or e-mail addresses their kids are using. Be wary of web-cams."
And a warning for online predators: the person you're chatting with might just be a cop.
"They may be talking to someone they believe is a child, but it's actually a law enforcement officer," he says.
For instance, the account Baumgarten used to nab Alan Heistad is still online at an undisclosed website.
