(Heather Poltrock, WSAW) The Wood County Sheriff’s Office has taken several recent calls about a jury duty scam.
According to Heather Poltrock with WSAW, investigators said scammers are using the Sheriff’s Office phone number. This practice is known as spoofing.
According to the FCC, spoofing is when a caller uses technology to deliberately falsify the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity.
Investigators said the scammers then say they are calling about a warrant for failure to appear for jury duty. The sheriff’s office said they’re not behind these calls, and ask people to not provide personal information during these phone call.
