For many, many years now Central Wisconsin Fire Departments have been displaying a special wreath between Thanksgiving and New Years Day.

A wreath that is supposed to encourage the public to prevent fires. Every time a structure fire in Wood County occurs, a Red Tree is installed on the wreath. Their goal of course is to prevent those red trees from showing up.

During the holidays most families put up Christmas trees and lights; they also tend to cook and bake more than usual. Not only during the holidays, but all through the winter, we have our heating systems up and running. But sometimes we don't think about the fire issues related to it.

Fire prevention is a big part of the fire department's responsibilities. They try to remind the public of those concerns, especially during the holidays. Furthermore, with winter weather and the holiday season coming, we should all be preparing our homes for winter fire safety in the following ways.

Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Christmas lights: Make sure all lights are in good working condition with no exposed wires or loose light bulbs, Follow the manufacturer's guidelines in regards to length.

Try to avoid the use of extension cords whenever possible. Christmas trees should not be placed near any heating sources and make sure the tree is watered daily.

Make sure lights are in good working order with no exposed wires or loose light bulbs. Lights should be unplugged when no one is home or when you are sleeping, and please don't overload outlets.

Heater and heated blankets should be in good working order. Do not use extension cords and turn off when not in use. Make sure firewood is stored in a safe area and ashes are kept in a nonflammable container.

Ashes should no longer be hot when disposing of them. Keep candles away from any flammable / combustible material. Sidewalks and doorways and all heating exhaust are kept clear of ice and snow.

These are all good tips on how to keep you, your friends and family safe throughout the holidays and the winter.
