Abbotsford Man Arrested for Burglary, Trespassing, and More

The Colby-Abbotsford Police Department had an ongoing investigation concerning two burglary incidents involving a male suspect in the City of Abbotsford.

The suspect has been identified and arrested. There is no threat to the public. The first incident occurred on August 31, 2024, at approximately 12:58 am on the 400 block of N Second St.

Dispatch received a report of a male subject who had entered an apartment without permission. The occupants of the apartment woke up to investigate footsteps they heard in the apartment and saw there was a male subject in the home.

The male subject ran out of the house. It was discovered the male subject was able to enter through an unsecured window in the upper part of the home.

The occupants were not able to provide a detailed description, the investigation remained ongoing. The second incident occurred on November 10, 2024 at approximately 1:22 am on the 200 block of N First St.

Dispatch received a 911 call from a female caller indicating she needed help. Colby-Abbotsford Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Department responded to the address.

Officers were told a male subject had entered the house without permission. The occupants of the house had woken up to someone attempting to open the bedroom door.

A male occupant investigated the noise. While the male occupant was investigating the noise the male subject went into the bedroom with the female occupant.

After the female occupant screamed, the male subject grabbed her by the throat and held her mouth shut. The male occupant returned to the bedroom, had a brief altercation with the male subject, who then ran from the house.

The male occupant chased the male subject but lost sight of him. The occupants were able to provide a detailed description of the suspect. It is believed the male subject had entered through an unsecured door.

Officers searched the area at that time. Colby-Abbotsford Police Department conducted a thorough investigation in the following days, with the help of video surveillance cameras around the area.

With the detailed description of the suspect provided in the most recent incident, officers were able to follow a male subject with a matching description, on the surveillance cameras, to his home.

During an interview with the suspect, he admitted to both incidents. The suspect was arrested at this time. The suspect has been identified as Jomar A Ortiz Rivera of Abbotsford.

Ortiz Rivera is currently being charged with Burglary, Strangulation & Suffocation, Battery and Criminal Trespass. Ortiz Rivera is currently in the Clark County Jail.

The Colby-Abbotsford Police Department appreciates the assistance of local residents and businesses in allowing us to utilize video from their surveillance cameras during our investigation which led to the arrest of Ortiz Rivera.
