Wisconsin Sees a Drop in Commodity Prices Compared to a Year Ago

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) In September 2024, Wisconsin farmers received an average of $3.70 per bushel for corn, as reported by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in the Agricultural Prices report.
According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, this price was down 3 cents from August and $1.37 lower than in September 2023. For soybeans, the average price per bushel was $10.20 in September, a decrease of 30 cents from the previous month and $3.50 lower compared to the same period last year.
The average price for oats also dropped, coming in at $3.11 per bushel, which was 6 cents below August and 85 cents below the previous September. Hay prices saw a varied trend.
The average price for all types of hay stood at $123.00 per ton in September, $5.00 less than in August but $10.00 higher than a year ago. Alfalfa hay averaged $132.00 per ton, reflecting a $7.00 decrease from August and a notable drop of $42.00 compared to last September.
In contrast, prices for other types of hay remained steady at $97.00 per ton, unchanged from August but $16.00 lower than last year. The average milk price for Wisconsin farmers was $25.50 per cwt, an increase of $2.50 from August and $5.40 higher than in September 2023.
Dairy herd replacement cows averaged $2,850 per head as of October 1, 2024, showing stable demand for dairy livestock.
