Greenwood School Board Discusses Board Elections, Next Meetings, and More

The Greenwood School Board set their next meetings and discussed Board elections at their recent meeting.

The Board set the November, December, and January Board Meeting Dates. The board meetings will be November 21st, December 18th, and January 29th.

They also highlighted two Board Members up for reelection including the members for Area 1 and Area 4. A Type A Notice of Election will be published in the TRG by November 26th.

December 7th -January 7th candidates file campaign registration. December 7th is the deadline for filing non-candidacy. The Board also approved the 5-year commitment renewal with Rural Virtual Academy.

They also approved Margie Olson as a volunteer for Tera Horvath’s Classroom. The Board also approved the FFA Incentive Trip to the World’s Toughest Rodeo on February 1st.

During the communications portion of the meetings, students talked about how they would like to be able to use backpacks to take to classes during the school day. The Board also heard many reports.

Elementary Principal Christy Zierer reported on Spirit Week. The parade was wonderful, students enjoyed it. 3rd grade went to the Lucille Tack Center for the Arts in Spencer on October 21st. They saw a presentation called “Air is Everywhere.” They’re also looking into seeing the play “A Christmas Carol” at the UW Center.

The first meeting of the EPEC was on October 16th at 6:00 pm. The next meeting is set for November 13th at 6:00 pm. Also, a climate survey was created to help the District keep a pulse on their connection with families. A survey was sent home in Thursday folders, on Skyward, and mentioned at parent/teacher conferences.

She also discussed fire safety. They had their second fire drill on October 16th. Chief Del did a fabulous job getting the smokehouse and multiple firefighters. On October 17th, they had 2 firefighters go to each classroom and talk. Then the kids went to the smokehouse.

She also reported on the Key to Literacy or ACT 20 Training. By the end of October, they will have completed Module 3. Finally, she stated they have completed their universal screeners and almost all of their diagnostic assessments.

Middle/High School Principal’s Noah Werner reported they will be wrapping up 1st trimester on November 21st. Parent/Teacher conferences were on October 17th.

October 14th-18th was advising week for our students. For field trips, he mentioned the FFA World Dairy Expo, Science Club trip to the Apostle Islands, Cloverbelt Youth Leadership Conference, and the Spanish Club field trip to Puerto Rico.

He also discussed the HRS/Guiding Coalition: The Guiding Coalition meeting was on October 24th to finalize their Model of Instruction. They will be using this model to dictate PD in the future, align classroom goals, and instructional practices.

Also, the One Act Play presented “The Illusionist” at regionals on the 14th. They will be moving on to sectionals on November 6th. On October 24th, representatives from Clark County Sheriff’s Office provided training to District staff on updated ALICE procedures. They went through scenarios with the Sheriff’s Office.

Homecoming was October 7th-11th and was, overall, a great success and experience for our students. He thanked the student council, their advisors, Mrs. Kuehl, Ms. Croxall, Tara Rueth, and Erin Shafto. Also, they are sending out a survey to all parents for feedback on both the Elementary and MS/HS buildings. Survey closes on October 29th.

Athletic Director/Dean of Students Jennifer Mayenschein, reported on Student Council. Homecoming went well. The Veterans Day Program is 11/11/2024 at 10:00 am. She also mentioned the Santa Project. They will start sending out letters and information on November 1st.

For the Cloverbelt Leadership Summit, 6 student athletes attended. Anton Livingston, Keagan Gipe, Hayden Rakovec, Faith Kolano, Addy Bieneck, and Madison Stieglitz. For Fall Sports, she stated they’re wrapping up. Cross Country Sectionals were Saturday.

Dig Pink Night was very successful and raised $6,000. They received compliments from Granton that Jenny and the VB team included their seniors for Senior Night.

For Winter Sports, they have one high schooler in wrestling, 15 in Boys Middle School Basketball, 11 in Middle School Girls Basketball, 15 in High School Boys Basketball, and 14 in High School Girls Basketball.

District Administrator Joe Green reported on the Elementary HVAC. The Trane Company is providing the elementary staff a complimentary lunch on November 7th as a “thank you” for being patient and dealing with the hot temperatures at the start of the school year.

Report cards were released this week to the district for review. They’re having a Joint Board Meeting with Loyal on November 4th. They will be presented with the Baird Model as a consolidated district.

He also mentioned Amish/Mennonite Schools. They’re collecting enrollment numbers for the annual report that is required by the DPI for federal funding.

They found a school that was not reported in the past. This should have a positive impact on funding next year. Overall, there are a total of 140 students in these schools.

He also discussed the Daycare. They are still providing lunch to 7 C’s Daycare. This has been going well on both ends. He also stated he attended the WCASS conference last week to network and learn with other Special Education Directors.

For funding, the state biennium budget is really pushing for 60% special education funding for this budget cycle. This would have a major impact on the District’s budget as they continue to transfer over $600,000 to cover unfunded mandates.

Finally, they heard a CESA 10 update.
