Tomah School District Answers Question About November 5th Referendum
Tuesday, October 15th, 2024 -- 9:00 AM
There have been some inquiries into why the Tomah Area School District is looking to purchase land to build a new school on, should the November 5th referendum pass, rather than using the school forest land they already own.
In the Tuttle School Forest, in Jackson County, there are two parcels totaling 73.68 acres owned by TASD. The 40-acre parcel has no road access, and the 33.68-acre parcel has road access by Crampton Road and County Hwy HH.
That land is 20 miles from the current high school. It was deeded to Tomah Area School District by the School District of Black River Falls. In the Town of Adrian, in Monroe County, there is a parcel of land that is 71.41-acres.
Most of the acreage is a narrow swatch of land that runs along Hwy 16. It is 8.7 miles from the current high school, about halfway to Sparta. It was deeded from the United States government to Tomah Public School Joint District #1 in 1958 and was part of the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act of 1949.
There are also 35.75 acres of land, divided into 2 parcels across from the Tomah VA Health Care System. The Wolf Den Outdoor Learning Center is on Glendale Avenue on one of the parcels and is utilized by students in 4K through high school throughout the year.
The other parcel is a 16 acre triangular shaped parcel of land that runs along Cty Hwy ET.
