Wisconsin Farmers See a Drop in Average Prices for Crops

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) In August 2024, Wisconsin farmers saw a drop in the average prices they received for key crops, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, corn prices averaged $3.73 per bushel, which was 35 cents lower than the previous month and $1.90 less than in August 2023.

Similarly, soybean prices fell to $10.50 per bushel, representing a decrease of $1.40 compared to July and $3.80 below August 2023. Oats also experienced a decline, with farmers receiving an average of $3.17 per bushel in August, down 21 cents from July and 55 cents lower than the same period last year.

Meanwhile, hay prices in Wisconsin averaged $128.00 per ton in August. This marked a $22.00 decrease from July, but the price was still $28.00 higher than in August 2023. Alfalfa hay, specifically, was priced at $139.00 per ton, a $24.00 drop from the previous month and $5.00 below last year’s price.

Other hay types averaged $97.00 per ton, down $20.00 from July and $3.00 less than August 2023. In contrast, milk prices saw an increase. Wisconsin dairy farmers received an average of $23.00 per cwt (hundredweight) for milk in August, which was $1.10 higher than in July and $3.80 above the August 2023 price.
