Colby-Abbotsford Police Department Offers Warning Regarding Mortgage Reduction Scam
Friday, September 27th, 2024 -- 11:01 AM
The Colby-Abbotsford Police Department is warning about a scam involving a letter discussing a special mortgage reduction program.
If you receive a letter similar to this, it is a scam. Do not respond to it. It is not legit. In a cast discussed by the Department, the victim ended up communicating with the 'employee' managing his account via text message. The victim received forms from the company.
The victim was told they did not need to pay their existing mortgage as it was being switched over to the new company. This 'lender' also required a $1700 check for the processing fee and the victim needed to send a photo of the check.
The victim's real lender had contacted them concerning the missed payments. Fortunately, in this case, the victim was able to file a fraud claim through the bank and was able to recover the lost funds. Unfortunately, being able to recover your lost funds is often not possible with some scams people are falling victim to.
Always be skeptical of letters, calls, texts, emails and computer pop-ups which are making too good to be true claims or claiming some sort of bad issue is occurring. If you ever have any doubt, you can always come talk to the Department.
They will take a look at it. Or you can talk to your friends or family or even your bank; have a second or third set of eyes look at it. Please talk with your friends and family concerning scams. Don't fall victim to scams.
