Crop Progress for Wisconsin's Farmers this Past Week

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) Wisconsin farmers continued to make significant strides in their fieldwork during the week ending September 22, 2024.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, above-average temperatures accelerated the maturity of corn and soybeans, while dry weather provided ideal conditions for harvesting corn silage, cutting hay, and seeding winter wheat.

Other activities included potato harvesting, manure spreading, and fall tillage. Crop Progress Highlights: Corn: 97% of corn reached the dough stage, and 82% entered the dent stage. Harvesting for silage was 49% complete. Corn condition remained strong, with 64% rated good to excellent.

Soybeans: 88% of soybeans were coloring, and 65% were dropping leaves. The harvest was 9% complete. Soybean condition also improved, with 63% rated good to excellent.

Winter Wheat: Planting was 34% complete, and 18% of the planted wheat had emerged. Hay: The fourth cutting of alfalfa hay was 79% complete. Potatoes: Harvesting was 62% complete. Fall Tillage: 6% of the land had been prepared for fall planting.

Soil Moisture Conditions: Topsoil moisture was rated 6% very short, 35% short, 57% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 3% very short, 30% short, 66% adequate, and 1% surplus.
