Marshfield Utilities Files for Water Rate Increase

Monday, September 23rd, 2024 -- 11:00 AM

Marshfield Utilities (MU) has filed a water rate increase request with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW).

This is the first time in 8 years that MU has sought to increase water rates through a conventional rate case. The increase is due to increased operating costs, lead water service replacements, water treatment facility filter media replacement, above ground storage tank painting, and PFAS treatment facility as well as ongoing replacement of aging water mains.

Since 2016, MU has invested $13.6 million in improvements in the water utility including upgrades to the water transmission and distribution infrastructure. Additionally, local operating expenses have increased over 12 percent while inflation has increased over 32 percent.

If approved, the overall increase in water rates would be approximately 13%, which is an average increase of about 1.6% per year. The new rates will become effective in early 2025. With the increase 10 gallons of water will cost just under 6 cents or $0.0593.

MU understands that any increase in rates can create financial challenges for our customers. We encourage customers to visit our website at https://bit.ly/mu-water-conservation-tips for tips on ways to reduce usage to help mitigate any increase in rates.

The PSCW will perform a cost of service study to determine the actual rate increase. MU customers will have a chance to address the PSCW during a Rate Case Hearing that will be scheduled at a later date.
