FAIRGROUNDS OUT OF NEILLSVILLE??

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 -- 9:25 AM

Could the Clark County Fairgrounds ever move out of Neillsville?

The idea was floated by Dorchester-area supervisor Gary Leichtman during discussion on the sales tax Wednesday.

"We've got a lot of option out there," Leichtman began, "How about? just throw this out there. Where our county fair is, it's on prime real estate. What if we sold that property, went up there, put it on that 200 acres we have up north and put it on an interstate."

"That would probably bring in more people."

Fellow north-ender Fred Schindler also had ideas to save the county money.

A business owner himself, Schindler said the county needed to scale back county employee benefits, which costs the county nearly $5-million per year.

"Most private sectors are around $6,000 to $8,000, here, a single is $8,000, a family is $18,000. There is work to be done in that area," Schindler said.

The problem, according to Chairman Wayne Hendrickson, is unions aren't willing to accept benefit reductions.

"I understand that, but if you don't challenge, you approve," Schindler replied, "If we can't see some help, maybe we need to downsize and put it out to the private sector, because they have the willingness to do so."
