SALES TAX IN FOR PARLIAMENTARY HANG-UP

Friday, July 25th, 2008 -- 12:22 PM

Clark County sales tax? Not so fast.

A parliamentary flub at Wednesday's meeting will delay certification of the ordinance authorizing the half-percent county sales tax.

Corporation counsel Frank Vasquez advised supervisors they could "suspend the rules" with a simple majority vote; the motion actually requires a 2/3-majority, or 20 votes of the 29 member body.

The motion to suspend the rules and consider the 2nd and 3rd reading of the ordinance passed with only 15 votes.

County Clerk Christina Jensen tells Central Wisconsin Broadcasting News she will not certify the ordinance until the corporation counsel returns from vacation next week.

It appears likely the board will have to take the issue up next month.

In order to enact the sales tax on January 1st, a certified copy of the ordinance must be sent to the state Department of Administration by the end of August.
