(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A Mosinee man has been sentenced to four years in prison for stabbing a police officer during a welfare check last January.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Randy Beardsley will also serve one year of extended supervision and complete all necessary treatment as part of a plea deal announced on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old previously entered a no contest plea for one felony count of battery against an officer and one misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing an officer. Beardsley was found passed out along Main Street in Mosinee during a cold snap in January when overnight air temperatures hovered below zero.
He then stabbed an officer who arrived to perform a welfare check on him. The officer managed to call for backup, which included a K9 unit from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.
Beardsley refused to comply with commands, leading officers to deploy the K9. Both Beardsley and the officer who was stabbed were hospitalized for their injuries. Both have since recovered. After Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Beardsley was immediately turned over to the state prison system.
Court records show at least four victim impact statements were given during the hearing. It’s unclear what prompted the attack. Until now, Beardsley had no criminal record in the state of Wisconsin.
