DNR ISSUES DEER SEASON MAP
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 -- 1:42 PM
The DNR is out with their 2008 Deer Structure map. It shows Clark County will also not have an October gun hunt or "Earn-a-Buck" this fall.Hunters in a handful of zones, including those in Clark County, proved to the DNR they could keep a 2-to-1 doe-to-buck ration without the October hunt, so there will be no antlerless-only hunt this fall.
Michelle Windsor with the DNR's Black River Falls office says the October antlerless-only hunt was looked forward to by many hunters, but others were concerned it caused problems with other seasons.
"I had several people upset they've been singled-out not to have the October hunt. It's kind of like the baiting issue: there are a lot of people that like it, but there are a lot of very vocal people that don't," Windsor says.
There are plenty of Earn-a-Buck zones along the Mississipi River and east-central Wisconsin, but much of northern and southern Wisconsin are Earn-a-Buck free.
Windsor says the harsh winter may have impacted the heard up north, but it doesn't appear to have here.
"Not around here all that much," Windsor notes, "I'm still seeing, unfortunately, a lot of twins. I didn't have a whole lot of reports of deer that didn't make it through the winter."
Anyone can help with deer observation. Contact the DNR and they'll give you a form to report deer sightings.
