CLARK CO. GOING TO VOIP

Thursday, July 17th, 2008 -- 12:22 PM

In an attempt to save money, Clark County appears ready to spend some.

This week, the county Public Property Committee decided to push forward with a plan to switch their phone system to a VOIP system.
VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol.

The county currently has around 245 separate phone lines, each with a monthly fee. The new technology will allow the county to operate with only 15 lines.

The service, called MITEL, will require a $65,000 investment for start-up, but is projected to save the county around $3,700 per month.

While the change shouldn't impact those trying to reach county offices, there will be some training necessary for employees. The equipment could be installed by November.
