NATIONAL GROUP WANTS TO HELP AMISH IN LEGAL TROUBLE
Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 -- 1:09 PM
A national organization is attempting to intervene as a Jackson County town cracks down on alleged building code violations by Amish residents. The National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom has filed a legal brief with Jackson County court requesting to intervene in at least one of the cases.
In the case, an Amish man built a home without the required permit. He was served a summons last year.
The Committee wants to defend the Amish culture and notes the Old Order community is often reluctant to defend themselves.
The man could be fined between $25 to $1,000 per each day of non-compliance.
A similar case in 2006 netted over $10,500 in fines for an area man.
