(Brad Hanson, WAOW) Section 715 Throwing and Droptine Fabrication presented a $21,000 check to the Sheriff's of Portage and Wood counties Thursday.
According to Brad Hanson, the money was raised at their second annual event held earlier this month. Each department was also given a thermal scope, valued at $9,000 each.
The money is a vital part of the K9 mission, as both departments rely on private funding to get their K9 programs started, and to sustain them. Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said it costs about $16,000 to get a K9 into their program and trained.
After that, it takes about $3,000-5,000 a year to maintain. Krissy Pliska, co-owner of Droptine Fabrication and one of the organizers of the event, said seeing their total raised go from $2,000 in the first year to $21,000 this year was great.
"It was definitely heartwarming when we totaled up the numbers and saw the impact of other individuals coming together to help make this possible, it was definitely a heartwarming feeling," she said.
It's a sentiment echoed by Section 715 manager Chris Adams. "It's unbelievable. Just in the axe throwing industry the people we see coming in from Plover and Stevens Point, it's just a good feeling, the people that come through here and what we can do for the community to give back," he said.
Adams said they're planning to have the event next year and are hoping it'll be even bigger then.
