With School Around the Corner, Now is the Time to Adjust Kid's Sleep Schedules

Tuesday, August 13th, 2024 -- 9:00 AM

(Bob Hague, Wisconsin Radio Network) School is right around the corner and now’s the time to start adjusting kids’ sleep schedules.

UW-Madison Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Casey Freymiller said the amount of sleep needed depends on a kids’ age. A 3-year-old needs about 12 hours, a 10-year-old about 10 hours, and that number goes down as they get older.

Freymiller said if kids don’t get enough sleep, they can have slower response times, mental fogginess, heightened emotional responses, and trouble remembering things they learn. She said parents should start adjusting their kids to school schedules by mid-August.
