Marathon County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Retires After 30 Years
Wednesday, August 7th, 2024 -- 11:00 AM
After nearly 31 years of service to Marathon County, Lieutenant Mark Wagers has retired.
Lieutenant Wagers started his career with the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office in the early 1990’s, ultimately coming to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office in 1993.
Early in his career, Mark’s enthusiasm and hard work earned him opportunities to serve on the Dive Team and as a Crisis Negotiator, later becoming the team leader of the Dive Team.
In 2000, Mark was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and has held this position since that time, leading deputies in their daily duties for more than 24 years. Mark has led teams in Patrol, Court Security and on several of the Department’s special teams.
At a time when the Courthouse was undergoing significant enhancements to the physical security of the property, Mark led the way ensuring the improvements and staffing were in place.
Through the relationships he has developed over the years, Mark has obtained equipment and training at little to no cost for many of the special teams and the courthouse complex. Mark also created the first Mobile Field Force team in Marathon County.
His efforts ensure that community assets and infrastructure will be protected well into the future. One of Mark's greatest attributes is his commitment to his team and to the community. Mark’s can-do attitude and willingness to lead from the front have always set him apart from others.
Right up to his last days and weeks, Mark took the time to provide encouragement to his team, lead a team on a major week-long operation, provided insight on training and risk mitigation to those who serve the community and encouraged an optimistic outlook for the future of the office and community. Mark’s contributions are truly too great to list.
The impact he made will be realized for many years to come and his tenacious spirit will be missed. The Department thanks him for all he’s contributed to the community over the years. He has made a lasting impact. They wish him only the best in retirement.
