Not far from where Ed Gein lived, another disturbing story is developing in a sleepy Wood County community. What started as a frantic search to find a missing Wisconsin Rapids area man ended in a most unexpected way Tuesday, and now, authorities say a 46-year-old man abducted two men, chained them in his house, beat them and sexually assaulted them.
Edward Lanphear is in jail, held on a $1-million cash bond.
According to police records, two men, ages 21 and 23, were imprisoned at his residence for days.
The 21-year-old was out drinking Sunday night, he passed out in his car. When he awoke, he was naked, chained and locked and hanging in Lanphear's garage. He believes he was beaten with a pipe and sexually assaulted.
Somehow, the man was able to escape and went to a neighbor's home where police were notified.
The subsequent search of the home found a 23-year-old man who had been missing since last Friday. He was chained to the basement floor. The chains were connected to a shotgun, making it life-threatening to move.
That victim apparently got into Lanphear's vehicle Friday night. When Lanphear said he was a police officer. The victim was then handcuffed and knocked unconscious with a flashlight.
According to online court records, Lanphear has never been in trouble with the law, and neighbors call him an "ordinary guy".
