Marshfield High School Senior Discusses His Time in Robotics Club

Monday, July 8th, 2024 -- 10:00 AM

Latrell Lee, 17, is a Senior at Marshfield High School.

He has been a part of the FIRST® Robotics Club since January of this year. He first found out about the club from a friend and was recruited to the team. The FIRST® Robotics Club is a competition for high school students that offers the challenge of building a robot.

They are given a video with rules and instructions at the same time as the other competing teams. The team then has until a certain date to build and test their robot that is designed to perform the task outlined in the video.

This year, the task is music based, with the robot needing to pick up a music note and launch it into multiple targets, while avoiding other robots in the competition. Latrell shared that the group has learned a lot about metalworking and woodworking, as well as teamwork.

The teammates use a lot of engineering skills, building upon the application of things they have learned in school. Latrell’s favorite part is being able to drive the robot, along with working together with his friends.

He is known on the team for always being able to offer a laugh and to create a fun environment. Latrell encourages other youth to join the team. He said, “It is a fun experience after school. The team is very welcoming. Everyone is unique in their own way and offers their own skill and experience.”
