DATCP Reports Slight Decrease in Egg Production

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture and Trade (DAT) reported a slight decrease in egg production for May 2024.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, data from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) indicates a 7% decline in egg production compared to May 2023, totaling 204 million eggs for the month.

This decrease is mirrored by a 6% reduction in the average number of laying hens (layers) on hand within the state. Wisconsin reported 7.83 million layers in May 2024, compared to the previous year's figure. However, a positive note emerges when examining egg-laying efficiency.

The average number of eggs laid per 100 hens remained relatively stable at 2,609 in May 2024, reflecting a minimal decline of 1% compared to May 2023. This suggests that Wisconsin's laying hens are maintaining a consistent rate of egg production.

It's noteworthy that Wisconsin's egg production dip coincides with a stagnant national market. US egg production in May 2024 experienced a 2% decline year-over-year, highlighting the relative stability of Wisconsin's egg industry despite broader market trends.

Although May's figures indicate a modest decrease, Wisconsin's egg production remains significant.
