(Mike Leischner, WSAU) One of the three Wausau-area men accused of beating a Stevens Point man has requested a new judge to oversee his case.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Arlin Sangster appeared in court on Tuesday where his request for a substitute judge was granted. The reckless homicide charges against him will pause, with a scheduling conference set for July 29th.
The 19-year-old is accused of beating Donald Mitchell Jr in a downtown Stevens Point parking lot. Witnesses say Sangster was one of three men rummaging through Mitchell’s vehicle.
When the 51-year-old returned to the truck to confront them, they beat him and left him in the parking lot. Mitchell was rushed to a Stevens Point hospital and died the next day.
Sangster faces a felony count for reckless homicide with modifiers for being a party to the crime, meaning investigators say he didn’t act alone, and a potential increased penalty due to the victim’s age. He could serve up to 46 years in prison if found guilty at trial.
Christian Emerson and Brandon Boehm also face similar charges stemming from the incident. Boehm will enter a plea for the charges on September 3rd, Emerson returns to court on October 9th before facing a week-long trial in January 2025. He has pled not guilty to the charges.
