Wisconsin Winter Wheat Production Down; Maple Syrup Production Up

(Blake Jackson, Wisconsin Ag Connection) According to the latest USDA Crop Production report, Wisconsin's winter wheat production for 2024 is forecasted at 15.8 million bushels, showing a 10% decrease from the previous year's 17.5 million bushels.

According to Blake Jackson with the Wisconsin Ag Connection, as of June 1, the state's winter wheat yield is expected to reach 79.0 bushels per acre, which is 3.0 bushels higher than in 2023.

Growers in Wisconsin plan to harvest 200,000 acres of winter wheat for grain, marking a 13% reduction compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Wisconsin's maple syrup production in 2024 totaled 458,000 gallons, reflecting an increase of 1,000 gallons from 2023.

The number of taps also rose to 1,140,000, up by 20,000 taps from the previous year. Despite a slight decline in yield to 0.402 gallon per tap, down 1% from 2023's 0.408 gallon per tap, producers received an average price of $31.70 per gallon in 2023, an increase of 30 cents from the previous year.

Retail prices averaged $52.00 per gallon, while wholesale prices stood at $46.40 per gallon. Bulk sales amounted to 354,000 gallons in 2023, with an average price of $27.10 per gallon.

Overall, while Wisconsin's winter wheat production has decreased slightly, its maple syrup industry has seen modest growth in production and tapping operations, reflecting ongoing dynamics in the state's agricultural sector.
