BOARD APPROVES CHAIRLIFT SPENDING
Thursday, June 19th, 2008 -- 11:12 AM
For the first time in the hill's long history, visitors to Bruce Mound Winter Sports Area near Hatfield will get to use a chairlift. On a tight vote, the Clark County Board amended the budget to spend $300,000 on improvements for the county-run skiing, tubing and snowboarding facility. $200,000 will be combined with private donations to install a $400,000 chairlift.
The remaining $100,000 will help make improvements to the hill, including new runs and snowmaking equipment.
In contrast to the original proposal, this resolution uses money paid to the county from American Transmission Company, whose Arrowhead-Weston power line runs through northern Clark County.
That fund is supposed to be used for recreational purposes. It was joked last night the measure could "launder" the money. If Bruce Mound turns a profit, the proceeds would be returned to the general fund.
The resolution also makes clear this will be the last time the county spends money on the hill.
