COUNTY BOARD SET TO MEET

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 -- 1:31 PM

The County Board of Supervisors may implement a half-percent sales tax when they meet tonight (Wednesday).

Clark is one of only a handful of counties statewide that don't have the optional tax.

Supporters say it's a painless way to raise revenue from travelers and others, but opponents say residents oppose it and the extra revenue will be a "band-aid" to an ever-increasing budget deficit.

Also on the agenda tonight, a proposal to raise the mileage reimbursement rate from .39 to .42-cents per mile. It's projected to cost the county an additional $7,000 in the 2nd half of the year.

The Board last raised rates in 2005. At that time, the rate jumped from 34-cents to 39-cents per mile.

County employees are reimbursed for using their personal vehicles to travel for county business. They are not reimbursed for driving from home to their normal workplace.

County board members are reimbursed for all travel done for committee and board meetings.
